I want to see what happens when I don’t give up

Day 12

Dean and Sam looking over False Bay

13th Jan – Weight 95

Quote of the day: “Choice: junk food you have craved for an hour, or the body you have craved for a lifetime? YOUR decision”.

Oh really, who are they kidding, I choose the junk food every time.  Junk food I can have immediately, waiting for the new body takes too jolly long.

I have always said that if I go on a strict diet, I would, most likely, be hit by a bus, and my last thought would be: “I should have eaten those fries”.  But, in 2020, I was hit by a figurative bus, all the health issues in one go: the blood-loss to the extreme, heart issue, cancer, hysterectomy, Covid; I realise that my last thought must be changed to “I should have eaten that salad”.

So, you could say that Lose22 in 2022, is my decision and plan to get back on track, and maybe this time I will start to get the body I crave, and have vastly improved health too.

Inspired by the great day yesterday, I made bacon and eggs for breakfast, with a new twist, instead of bread, I had fried tomatoes and fried baby spinach.  (Wow – I fried spinach). And in true Keto style, it was in butter.  It was very good.  Almost as good as if I had it with bread, but it was very nice. And joy of joys, the meal was only 11g carbs, and 416 calories.

However, the day went a bit mad from there.  I had a sudden urgent task handed to me, just preparing income taxes – nothing too complicated – ha, ha, but it was needed by the evening. Of course, when things are urgent, I do literally drop everything and get stuck in.  I am the ultimate workaholic, and will work through the day and night, stopping at nothing to get the job done.  Usually, when I get into this mode, out would come the chips, bread, and other high-carb snacks.  Today, I did not fall into this pattern, instead I made a great salad of Parma ham, salami, baby spinach, together with two Laughing Cow cheese wedges. This would have been a super low-carb meal, but then I added a handful of grapes, which upped the carb count to 14,5g, but only 291 calories, which is still OK. And the grapes made me feel wonderful, and they are full of anti-oxidants. (I will research that, but it sounds healthy).

However, I started to get the afternoon cravings. I realise that people in articles talk rubbish, its not because of eating too many carbs that give me cravings. I measured my blood sugar in the mid-afternoon, and it was super low (not dangerous, but low for me). This shows that my afternoon slump is due to low blood sugar.  I would normally eat stacks of sugar that my body is craving, but today I piled on peanuts instead.  Also, it was super-hot again, so I had Marcel’s frozen yogurt.  (I forgot about the Carb-Clever Ice cream). Anyway, they say yogurt is good for you.  (Here, they mean the Greek kind, I imagine, not the chocolate with sugar kind).

And then dinner, which was awesome.  It was a beef stew with vegetables, carrots, courgettes (baby marrows), button mushrooms, cauliflower and broccoli. (Do not mention the potatoes that were in there too).  I had been working too hard, and I ate a bit more potatoes than I should, but it was delicious.  I am sorry I forgot to take a picture of it, I was too tired. My daughter made the stew in the slow cooker which she re-discovered.  It took 6 or so hours, the beef was soft, falling apart, well worth the wait. Pity that I worked throughout it all.  Between the Marcel’s and the potatoes,  I was about 20g carbs more than I planned, but I feel that working as hard as I did, should keep the weight off (or so I tell myself.  Anyway, on the whole, compared to what I would normally chow down on a very hectic day, I am pleased with myself.
