Quote of the day: The toughest part of DIET isn’t watching what you eat, it’s watching what other people eat.
This quote is so very true, and very apt for me. If anyone near me eats something that I am not allowed, (or in better wording, have chosen to eliminate from my eating plan) I immediately want to have what they are having. Someone eating a packet of crisps? My nose is like that of a Labrador (who have of the best noses) – I can smell out any sort of potato food anywhere. It is a real test of strength to simply ignore what other people are having.
Anyway, tis a new day. Breakfast was the leftover boerewors sausage and cauliflower mash – still yummy. I still cannot get over the mash. It was a very low-carb meal, with only 4 carbs, 315 calories. However, I did have a snack of peanuts (which in my case is way better than anything else). I marvel at the fact that I have not eaten bread this week, it is too amazing.
Because of the large breakfast, I only had a small lunch, being coffee with cream, and a Fuze Iced tea drink. (Liquid lunch).
The great thing about today, is I went shopping at Woolworths, a proper treat, as I do not go there often, so I decided, its time I get some nice things. You will see that the rest of the week I mention Woolworths or Woollies – no I do not get sponsored by them (yet who knows).
Anyway, I see shopping as a great source of exercise, walking, and proper retail therapy. The way I go to a shop is not routine. I will go from one aisle to the next, then I remember I want something all the way back in another aisle, this goes on for a while, and I end up walking around the shop 4 times as long as it would have taken if I had done things systematically. But, that’s no fun, feels like work, with rules and regulations. Also, I get more walking steps in if I go back and forth from first to last aisle in haphazard fashion. Anyway, I managed to get some great veggies. Also, Woolies has the Carb Clever range of things, for example Carb Clever Tangy Mayonnaise – which is a great replacement for normal mayonnaise. And a great treat for me, no cooking tonight, I bought a roast chicken. Truly a delight. Roast chicken is of my favourite food, and this one looked awesome.
Often, I usually make a chicken sandwich with all sorts of things, which is, of course the best. But in an effort of cutting out bread and such, I made a roast chicken salad, with baby spinach, cucumber, feta, and the Carb Clever Mayonnaise. I added some red grapes for my fruit allocation, and to put a “pop of colour” on the plate, to quote from a MasterChef judge.

Speaking about MasterChef – the Australian one, it is an awesome show, and I am also excited that the South African one is starting up again. You would be thinking that I like to cook. No, I do not exactly like cooking. Reading recipes, watching cooking shows, yes, but actually cooking? Not quite such fun. I am OK with what I call “catering” – getting food I purchased and arranging it in a style that looks good. For example, cold meats and salads, roast chicken, that sort of thing, but actual cooking is a strain. When I hear people on the MasterChef show tearfully say they cook with love, I do not. Of course, I cry watching the show, but somehow, I cannot transfer the passion of watching the show to my own cooking.
Most people would tell you they hate things like hospital food or airline food. Not me, all the time I have been in hospitals, when I could eat, even at most ill, I wolfed down the hospital food with gusto. Airline food – love it, just that the portions are the size of a doll-house child’s tea party. Give me chicken or beef, just please not the vegetarian. (Oddly, the vegetarian usually has lots of potato and other high-carb veg so I can rightfully say no to that).
I could live on hotel’s breakfast buffets and room service. The best thing that happened to me was staying in Zambia on business several times, where the hotel only did breakfast, you had to make plans for your own lunch. There was a mall nearby, with a KFC and a Hungry Lion, that was no problem for me. The one thing was you had to walk there and back, so you could say you earned the meal, well I did anyway. Plus, at the Zambia office there was no place to eat, so I could say the KFC meal made up for lunch and supper. Justified all round, I should think.
Back at home, I would, any day of the week go to MacDonalds, KFC, SPUR, or the fish shop (Fishhoek Fisheries – best on the planet). It’s a real hardship for me to give these up now. However, I will still treat myself now and again, but I cannot go to these places on a regular basis. (As a part of my NFC diet it is a commitment I have made). So, here is to preparing more of my own food. However, the FAM has also promised to help me cook new meals, which will be cool. (Did I mention, FAM = family). Anyway, here’s to the next year ahead of awesome new food and stuff.
